Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet - Yearning and Profound
The Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet ranks among the most exciting new discoveries on the European jazz scene. Born in 1998 in Ulaanbaatar, the pianist and composer brings a unique sound to yearning melodies, enriched with profound and expressive harmonies and rhythms. Between Mongolian soul and European sophistication, her music is inspired by encounters and moments of life, giving each piece a personal touch.
Although the quartet has a classic jazz lineup of piano, bass, saxophone, and drums, Erdenebaatar lends this format a fresh, modern character that is unmistakably her own. Her sound thrives on energized freedom and dynamic unity, with which she leads her band. After classical studies in Mongolia, her path led her to Munich, where she found her own voice in jazz—unmistakable in brilliance, finesse, and compositional clarity.
The quartet consists of bassist Nils Kugelmann, alto saxophonist and recorder player Jakob Manz, and drummer Amir Bresler. The quartet was awarded the prestigious German Jazz Prize in 2024 in the category "Ensemble of the Year." Invitations to major European festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzahead!, Jazz Baltica, and the Reykjavik Jazz Festival follow.
