Das Septett Initial Conditions vereint sieben Musiker*innen aus unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Kontexten: João Gato (Kopenhagen), Till Müller (Leipzig), Lara Fleischer (Leipzig), Ronja Sophie Putz (Leipzig), Samuel Dietze (Dresden), Marina Schlagintweit (Leipzig) und Vincent Meissner (Leipzig).
Der Titel Initial Conditions verweist auf die situativen Ausgangsbedingungen jener musikalischen Begegnung, aus denen sich sämtliche klanglichen Entwicklungen des Ensembles ableiten. Im Zentrum steht eine prozessuale, improvisatorische Praxis mit starkem Instant-Composing-Charakter: Ausgehend von offenen Strukturen konstruieren sich alle musikalische Prozesse immanent und in Echtzeit, welche sich stetig durch spontane Interaktion, Verdichtung und Auflösung transformieren. Ereignisse, Phasen und Zustände bilden sich, vergehen und werden im kollektiven Spiel neu geformt.
Die klangliche Identität des Ensembles speist sich aus einer kammermusikalischen Anlage, die klassische Besetzungslogiken aufgreift und zugleich erweitert. Ein Streichtrio aus Violine und Cello trifft auf Holzbläser (Altsaxophon und Bassklarinette), ergänzt durch Klavier, Schlagzeug und Live-Elektronik. Diese Kombination ermöglicht eine breite Palette an Klangfarben und strukturellen Rollen, die flexibel eingesetzt und immer wieder neu gedacht werden.
Ästhetisch bewegt sich das Projekt im Spannungsfeld zwischen Neuer Musik des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts, Creative Music, Jazz sowie experimenteller elektronischer Musik. Klangfarbliche Konzepte, die an Werke wie Arnold Schönbergs Verklärte Nacht erinnern, stehen neben seriell geprägten, klavierstückartigen Strukturen und werden mit zeitgenössischen Ansätzen aus Mikrotonalität und spektraler Harmonik verbunden, wie sie etwa in der Arbeit von Christian Lillinger oder Steve Lehman zu finden sind. Live-Elektronik und modulare Klangsynthese erweitern das akustische Instrumentarium um zusätzliche Dimensionen des Sounddesigns.
Das Ensemble verfügt über ein bewusst offenes musikalisches Vokabular, aus dem heraus es seine eigenen Kommunikationsformen und Toolboxes entwickelt. Durch ein hohes Maß an Spontaneität und individuellem Gestaltungsraum entsteht eine dynamische Balance zwischen persönlicher Klangsprache und gemeinsamen ästhetischen Vorstellungen. Diese Prozesse wirken sowohl auf der Mikroebene des instrumentalen Spiels als auch auf der Makroebene der Formbildung, in der improvisierte Stücke oft als geschlossene, organisch gewachsene Einheiten erscheinen.
Die Improvisationen folgen dabei häufig einem suitenhaften Aufbau, in dem unterschiedliche Besetzungen, Rollenverteilungen und klangliche Kontexte erprobt werden. Klassische Instrumentenfunktionen können dabei bewusst imitiert, verschoben oder neu erfunden werden, ebenso entstehen alternative Formationen jenseits etablierter Muster. Innerhalb einer sich stetig entwickelnden Klangarchitektur verbindet Initial Conditions Einflüsse aus Neuer Musik, Jazz, freier Improvisation und elektronischem Sounddesign zu einem offenen, prozessorientierten musikalischen Organismus.

The septet Initial Conditions brings together seven musicians from diverse artistic backgrounds: João Gato (Copenhagen), Till Müller (Leipzig), Lara Fleischer (Leipzig), Ronja Sophie Putz (Leipzig), Samuel Dietze (Dresden), Marina Schlagintweit (Leipzig), and Vincent Meissner (Leipzig).
The title Initial Conditions refers to the situational starting points of this musical encounter, from which all of the ensemble’s sonic developments are derived. At the core is a process-oriented, improvisational practice with a strong element of instant composition: based on open structures, all musical processes are constructed internally and in real time, constantly transforming through spontaneous interaction, condensation, and dissolution. Events, phases, and states emerge, fade away, and are reshaped through collective playing.
The ensemble’s sonic identity draws on a chamber music framework that both draws upon and expands upon classical instrumentation conventions. A string trio consisting of violin and cello is joined by woodwinds (alto saxophone and bass clarinet), complemented by piano, percussion, and live electronics. This combination enables a wide range of timbres and structural roles that are deployed flexibly and constantly reimagined.
Aesthetically, the project navigates the tension between 20th- and 21st-century contemporary music, creative music, jazz, and experimental electronic music. Tonal concepts reminiscent of works such as Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht coexist with serial-inspired, piano-piece-like structures and are combined with contemporary approaches to microtonality and spectral harmony, as found, for example, in the work of Christian Lillinger or Steve Lehman. Live electronics and modular sound synthesis expand the acoustic instrumentarium to include additional dimensions of sound design.
The ensemble employs a deliberately open musical vocabulary from which it develops its own forms of communication and toolboxes. A high degree of spontaneity and individual creative freedom creates a dynamic balance between personal musical language and shared aesthetic visions. These processes are at work both at the micro level of instrumental performance and at the macro level of form-building, where improvised pieces often emerge as cohesive, organically developed units.
The improvisations often follow a suite-like structure in which different instrumentations, role distributions, and sonic contexts are explored. Classical instrumental functions may be deliberately imitated, shifted, or reinvented, and alternative formations emerge beyond established patterns. Within a constantly evolving sonic architecture, Initial Conditions combines influences from contemporary classical music, jazz, free improvisation, and electronic sound design into an open, process-oriented musical organism.
