Private Providers in Berlin

Hamburg

The Hamburg University of Music and Theater (HfMT) has a tradition-rich jazz studies program (since 1985) with strong practical relevance. In close collaboration with the NDR Big Band, students receive practice-oriented training here. Well-known instructors such as big band conductor Wolf Kerschek and guitarist Sandra Hempel teach classical instrumental instruction alongside extensive improvisation, composition, and band experience. As an additional option, Hamburg also has the private Hamburg Conservatory, which also offers a state-recognized jazz/pop bachelor's degree (music pedagogy jazz/pop).

Cologne

The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln (HfMT Köln) is counted among Europe's most prestigious jazz schools. Numerous well-known musicians (e.g., Till Brönner, Pablo Held) have studied here. The jazz/pop degree programs (bachelor, master) are divided into many instrumental subjects and jazz vocals. The curriculum is designed with flexibility: after the first year, students choose a specialization (e.g., arrangement, performance, composition) and perform in both small and large ensembles. Cologne also offers a preparatory jazz program at the Offenen Jazz-Haus-Schule Köln, which serves as an artistic orientation year.

Dresden

At the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden, Jazz/Rock/Pop represents one of Germany's most traditional jazz education programs. This field of study was introduced as early as 1962, making it the oldest jazz department in Germany. The curriculum in Dresden is very broadly designed: In addition to the main subject (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, piano, Hammond organ, etc.), intensive ensemble work is the primary focus (including the university jazz orchestra). The goal is to develop an independent artistic personality.

Weimar

The Hochschule für Musik "Franz Liszt" Weimar combines jazz with contemporary music and other musical styles in its Jazz/Improvised Music degree program. The jazz department is designed with a modern approach: it actively promotes genre-crossing, hybrid musical forms. Students can study here in two bachelor programs (artistic or pedagogical) as well as in the master's program in jazz. Practically all instruments are offered (voice, woodwinds, brass, guitar, piano, bass, drums). The training is innovative, with plenty of room for creative experimentation and professional studio recordings.

Leipzig

The Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig (HMT Leipzig) offers comprehensive artistic and pedagogical training in jazz and popular music. The profile of the Leipzig jazz department emphasizes personal development and creativity while maintaining high musical standards. Jazz enthusiasts from around the world study in Leipzig: they benefit from first-class instructors, a dense network, and numerous performance opportunities (ensembles, workshops, own recording studios).

Essen (Folkwang)

The Folkwang University of the Arts (Essen) has a long-established jazz program. Here, graduates are to be well-equipped for the diverse demands of professional life in jazz. Folkwang combines traditional jazz education (solo and improvisation technique) with contemporary elements – from electronic music production to cross-genre projects. Students receive comprehensive instrumental training and are encouraged to develop their individual artistic voice.

Düsseldorf

The Robert Schumann University of Music Düsseldorf offers a practice-oriented jazz program with a strong focus on ensemble work. Students collaborate early on in bands and big bands, gaining stage experience in the process. The instruction emphasizes the integration of theory (jazz harmony, arrangement) and practice (workshops, joint concerts). (Individual details about the organization can be found on the university website.)

Mainz

In Mainz, the state University of Music Mainz has been offering jazz and popular music for many years. A current project is the Jazz Campus Mainz, which Prof. Sebastian Sternal founded in 2021. This campus is an innovative supplementary program for jazz students (workshops, master classes, ensemble playing).

Frankfurt am Main

The HfMDK Frankfurt (University of Music and Performing Arts) has its own Jazz study department. There are Bachelor's and Master's programs in Jazz in the fields of instrumental performance, voice, and composition. The university emphasizes: Jazz is a significant artistic form of expression and remains an important part of the study program. For example, the annual Jazz Festival at HfMDK demonstrates the university's active engagement in the Frankfurt jazz scene.

Saarbrücken

At the Saar University of Music (HfM Saar), "Jazz and Contemporary Music" is offered (B.Mus). The range of subjects in Saarbrücken goes beyond the classical jazz repertoire: contemporary music, electronic music, and modern crossover forms are also taught. In this way, students receive up-to-date training in all musical structures of jazz and improvised music.

Munich

The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMTM) operates a small but exceptionally strong jazz program. The focus areas are on artistic excellence and creative development. In Munich, students can complete a Bachelor of Jazz (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) – those who want to further their qualifications can continue in master's programs in jazz and pop.

Nuremberg

The Nuremberg University of Music presents itself with an internationally renowned jazz department. Many instructors in the Nuremberg jazz program are active figures in the European scene and excellently networked. The instructors promote individual sound language while themselves commanding a broad stylistic spectrum. The jazz/Nuremberg study program places great value on contemporary orientation and a worldwide network of festivals and masterclasses.

Würzburg

At the University of Music Würzburg there are several jazz degree programs: an artistic bachelor's, an artistic-pedagogical bachelor's, and a master's in jazz (performance). Würzburg maintains a vibrant jazz scene with many university ensembles and concert series – such as the regular jazz competition and various jazz festivals. Additionally, extracurricular offerings are provided (workshops, pre-college jazz), so that students receive broad support.

Mannheim

The State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim offers a Bachelor of Music in Jazz/Popular Music with majors in electric bass, jazz vocals, jazz guitar, jazz piano, double bass, drums, trombone, saxophone, and trumpet. Mannheim is known for its large university jazz ensemble and close networking with the regional jazz scene.

Trossingen

The Trossingen State University of Music offers jazz and popular music primarily as supplementary or teacher training subjects. Particularly strong classes in guitar, vocals, and drums have become established here. Well-known instructors include, for example, Martin Deufel (jazz drums), Anika Neipp (jazz vocals), or German Klaiber (electric bass/guitar). Trossingen is distinguished by interdisciplinary projects and numerous digital media offerings (for example, collaborations with Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences).

Bremen

The University of the Arts Bremen has a small, highly individual jazz program. In Bremen, intensive ensemble and band work as well as its own jazz club project are at the center. In addition to classical jazz tradition, modern styles are also considered here. The training takes place at a high artistic level, accompanied by experienced jazz musicians as instructors.

Hannover

The Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover (HMTMH) offers the degree program Jazz and Jazz-Related Music (B.A.). It combines artistic, scientific, and pedagogical content in a balanced way. Students can freely design their jazz profile and regularly participate in workshops and master classes with international guests. Starting in the fifth semester, there are elective modules for specialization, and the degree also qualifies graduates for teaching certification in Jazz.

Osnabrück

At Hochschule Osnabrück (Institute of Music), there is a Bachelor's degree program in "Music Education – Jazz". This degree program combines instrumental study in jazz with music education courses and qualifies graduates for teaching positions at schools. It is thus another state-funded training option for aspiring jazz educators in Germany.

Private Universities and Alternatives

Established Private Providers

The Music College Regensburg as the first private vocational school for rock/pop/jazz offers state-certified degrees. The SAE Institute (9 German locations) took over parts of the programs following Deutsche Pop's insolvency with partnerships to the University of Hertfordshire.

Alternative Training Paths
