Miles Davis 100 | hr-Bigband
For the 100th birthday of Miles Davis, the hr-Bigband honors the jazz legend with a unique tribute – Miles Davis himself performed at the Alte Oper in 1990. On a single evening, legendary albums resound with three of the most distinguished trumpet soloists of the current scene: Paolo Fresu, Axel Schlosser, and Arve Henriksen. The groundbreaking works "Miles Ahead," "Porgy and Bess," and "Sketches of Spain" are performed in full length with masterful interpretation under the direction of Miho Hazama.
Miles Davis was just 31 years old when he recorded the album "Miles Ahead" together with Gil Evans – a composition conceived as a suite with ten pieces that flow seamlessly into one another. Over the following three years, two more collaborative albums were created: "Porgy and Bess," in which Evans completely reinterpreted the Gershwin opera of the same name, and "Sketches of Spain." The album "Porgy and Bess" is considered groundbreaking for orchestral jazz and was one of Miles Davis's best-selling albums. "Sketches of Spain" was awarded a Grammy in 1961.
The hr-Bigband brings together seventeen outstanding musicians whose daily rehearsals and concerts as well as highest artistic standards form an ensemble that masters every challenge with ease. The hr-Bigband performs approximately 50 concerts per year and covers a broad spectrum of jazz styles, but also crosses boundaries into pop, classical, world music, and electronic music.
