Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band founded in 1999 in Wellington. Their musical style is characterized as a combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. "Based On A True Story" is the debut studio album of New Zealand group Fat Freddy's Drop, recorded in Wellington and released on their own label The Drop. The debut album was released in May 2005 and features ten tracks with future-funk elements, surprises, and experimental twists. The album is Aotearoa's longest-charting album with 111 weeks in the Top 40, won eight NZ Music Awards, and received Giles Peterson's Worldwide Music Awards in the United Kingdom. The album was certified 12-times platinum and sold over 135,000 copies.
