Fat Freddy's Drop
Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band founded in 1999 in Wellington. Their musical style is characterized as a combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. The band is known for their improvised live performances, with songs on their studio albums being versions that have been refined over years of live performances in New Zealand and on tours. The group gained international recognition in 2003 after their single "Midnight Marauders" was redistributed by record labels and DJs in Germany, and has toured through Europe almost every year since.
The band's debut album "Based On A True Story" won eight NZ Music Awards and Giles Peterson's Worldwide Music Awards in the United Kingdom. Fat Freddy's Drop is conducting the "Based On A True Story" 21st Anniversary Tour through Australia, Aotearoa, Europe, and the United Kingdom in 2026 – the first shows following the sudden death of founding member Chris "MU" Faiumu in July 2025. The Freilichtbühne Großer Garten open-air stage in Dresden has a capacity of 4,900 spectators and is located in the southeast of the Großer Garten park.
