Dottendorf Jazz Night - Julia Hülsmann Quartet
Julia Hülsmann was born in 1968 in Bonn and is an established figure in the German jazz scene. For almost 30 years, she has been performing her compositions, often based on lyrical works, with the award-winning Julia Hülsmann Trio. The trio was expanded into the Julia Hülsmann Quartet, whose debut album "Not Far from Here" (2019) was awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2021.
The quartet presents a varied program consisting almost exclusively of original compositions by Julia Hülsmann and her colleagues – tenor saxophonist Uli Kempendorff, bassist Marc Muellbauer, and drummer Heinrich Köbberling. A deep respect for jazz tradition as cultivated in the post-bop and modal jazz of the 1960s runs through this music and, combined with the quartet's modern approach, creates the foundation for highly expressive solos and deep ensemble playing. Since 2020, Hülsmann has been a professor of piano (jazz and popular music) and ensemble direction at UdK Berlin.
