Jimmy Dludlu – Afro Jazz in Motion
Jimmy Dludlu is a Mozambican jazz musician who picked up a self-built guitar belonging to his cousin at age 13 and taught himself by imitating jazz and African music he heard on the radio. His career gained momentum in the mid-1980s when he worked with various South African bands. His debut album "Echoes from the Past" (PolyGram, 1997) received two FNB SAMA Awards for "Best Newcomer" and "Best Contemporary Jazz Album" in 1998.
His numerous original compositions fall within the tradition of what is loosely termed Afro-Jazz. He is particularly drawn to the sounds of West and Central Africa as well as Latin America. He combines jazz, rock, and African rhythms in his music to create a distinctive sound that is captivating and expressive. He has released eight albums: Echoes from the Past (1997), Essence of Rhythm (1999), Afrocentric (2002), Corners of my Soul (2006), Portrait (2007), Tonota (2011), Jimmy Dludlu Live (2015), and In the Groove (2016).
