Lakecia Benjamin: We Dream
She is one of the flagships of contemporary jazz. In her music, funk, soul, and hip-hop meet the retro movement of the moment: Spiritual Jazz. She had already dedicated one of her recent albums to it in the form of a tribute to John and Alice Coltrane. Lakecia Benjamin's music can be described as a high-energy variant of this meditative subgenre. She herself understands her voluminous playing as a kind of healing musical practice. A claim she brought to the formula for DownBeat Magazine: "Every note I play touches someone on a deeper level." At the BASF Feierabendhaus, the saxophonist, nominated six times for a Grammy, presents her current album "We Dream." With openness and full emotional devotion to the moment, she stages her music as an empathetic dialogue with the audience. For why that works so perfectly and compellingly, she has a simple explanation: "I don't play anything that doesn't tell a story."
