Jazz Kitchen in House 73: Hedwig Jankos DIALECT
A finding of oneself, a greeting, a farewell: signals that become language. Language that lives without the
spoken word. Language that builds connections between personalities that
could not be more multifaceted and yet know their commonalities, relate to one another,
locate themselves, and communicate.
Lived language, unmistakable and authentic through each of its personal dialects.
Like language in the collective: signals that become sounds, then tones, music, and
finally stories. A finding of oneself, a greeting, a farewell. And what happens in
between.
'HEDWIG JANKOS D I A L E C T' is the latest project by saxophonist and composer
Hedwig Janko, who lives in Hamburg. With her quintet, an emerging young ensemble from
the Hamburg jazz scene, she combines free improvisation with the lyrical melodies of her
own compositions. The ensemble uses the full spectrum of sound, which produces both
intense, dense passages as well as moments of delicate transparency. In this way, musical
monologues become dialogues, conversations, and sometimes debates or imaginative narratives
that captivate the audience.
At the center is the diversity of musical "dialects" – the individual sound languages of the
musicians, who bring their personal touch to the project and thus shape the sound of
D I A L E C T.
