MATTI KLEIN SOUL TRIO (d)
What is soul? A captivating music style, say some. An overwhelming feeling, claim others. It is what makes us unmistakable, it says in English dictionaries. Each of these definitions applies to the MATTI KLEIN SOUL TRIO , but the latter describes the essence of the trio founded in 2017, which has since played well over 300 concerts worldwide, particularly well.
For in the Matti Klein Soul Trio, three kindred spirits have come together in the name of groove, charting their own path beyond the well-trodden roads of Hammond organ trios. At the center of the sound are the warm Wurlitzer tones of bandleader Matti Klein, who has already graced the most important jazz clubs in New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris with the funk jazz formation Mo' Blow and Brazilian yacht pop heavyweight Ed Motta.
The pleasant deep tones of a 1973 Fender Rhodes Piano-Bass are a similarly distinctive feature of the group as the precisely placed sound effects of tenor saxophonist and bass clarinetist Lars Dieterich. The elastic playing of drummer André Seidel ensures that you can literally take the trio's other specialty, an unintellectual fondness for odd meters, in stride. All these qualities also define "Soul Trio: Bouncin' In Bubbleverse," the trio's now third album.
On the recording, Klein & Co. process their rich touring experience with catchy melodies and long-resonating social reflections.
Prominent soul connoisseurs like BBC Radio legend Robert Elms or singer Max Mutzke swear by the trio's songs, in which vibrant soul jazz and the instrumental funk of The Meters or The Crusaders stand organically alongside hip-hop elements or spacey post-rock. And the media response to the band's previous recordings and live shows (including in Haiti, South Africa, Malaysia, Finland, and on a UK tour) speaks a clear language. "That grooves tremendously," judges Deutschlandfunk, while the British magazine Jazzwise states: "A new, smoking' hot twist on the much-loved organ trio format. They deserve to be huge everywhere!"
