JAZZ IN THE CORRIDORS: Saliou Cissokho and Showcase Vimbs Mavimbs Quartet –
SOUND AS MEMORY, HEALING, AND VISION
Saliou CissokhoSaliou Cissokho was born in Senegal into a Griot family, where the playing of the kora is traditionally passed down from father to son. Griots in West Africa are keepers of history and culture – they nourish the soul and connect people through music.
Saliou is both a kora builder and kora player. Building and playing this West African harp require deep and disciplined engagement with the musical traditions of the region. The sound of the kora fills space and body with fine, emotional, almost meditative vibrations. It is said: The person does not find the kora – the kora decides who finds it.
Although Saliou studied at the university in Dakar and initially devoted himself to modern sciences, his path led him back to the centuries-old tradition of his family. As a Griot, he carries forward the mission of his ancestors: keeping myths, satire, and poetry alive.
Saliou moves between traditional music and world music. Since 2012 he has lived in Hamburg and is active in various musical projects.
Showcase: Vimbs Mavimbs QuartetThe musical path of Vimbs Mavimbs, who describes himself as a "late bloomer," is not unlike that of Saliou. Although he discovered his calling only at age 18, he did not choose his instrument. Rather, as he says: "It chose me. It enables me to speak a language I didn't even know I needed."
Thembinkosi Mavimbela, known by the artist name Vimbs Mavimbs, is a double bassist, composer, and bandleader. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in jazz at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater. His project "Late Bloomer," which he presents this evening, celebrates life and rich African heritage. It stands for a contemporary sound that draws from traditional jazz approaches but consciously refuses to be limited by them.
The album of the same name is dedicated to the idea of "late awakening," honoring humble beginnings and the process of transformation. Inspired by the metaphor of the butterfly, it tells of hope and change. It is an ode to all late bloomers.
