Nicolas Simion & Friends
Nicolas Simion, actually Nicolae Simion, is a Romanian jazz saxophonist and composer, born in 1959 in Dumbrăvița, Brașov County. In the 1980s, he founded his first band Opus 4 with Mircea Tiberian and Dan Mândrilă, with which he performed successfully in Romania and at jazz festivals in Warsaw and East Berlin. In 1989 he moved to Vienna, where he had the opportunity for the first time to work with Western musicians such as Art Farmer, Leo Wright, Idris Muhammad, Jim Pepper, Harry Sokal, and Christian Muthspiel.
Since 1997 Simion has lived in Cologne. Here, among other things, the CD Balkan Jazz was created with Yugoslav trumpeter Dusko Goykovich. Simion was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize in the Improvisation category in 2015. Since 2004, Simion has headed the record label 7Dreams Records as label chief in his own right. His musical approach combines jazz with Transylvanian folk influences and is evident in albums such as Transylvanian Jazz and Romanian Impressions.
