BIX TOP ACT • Peter Somuah Group
Peter Somuah, a trumpeter from Accra who lives in Rotterdam, is a mediator between cultures and continents. His warm, melancholic sound and rhythmic fluency reflect his artistic socialization in the musical styles of West Africa. With his new album "Highlife" (November 2024), Somuah returns to his roots and his first musical love – together with a Dutch band that shares his deep passion for Highlife and Afrobeat.
Somuah learned his craft through intensive listening to his trumpet heroes Miles Davis and Roy Hargrove. In 2022, he won the Edison Jazz Award with his debut album "Outer Space". His ACT debut "Letter to the Universe" (2023) was described by Süddeutsche Zeitung as "proof of how complex jazz functions as a world language" – a cosmopolitan mosaic of his diverse influences. With "Highlife", Somuah now explores the music that has fundamentally shaped his playing, listening, and composing, together with musicians who investigate this tradition with fresh perspective.
