Lizz Wright
Lizz Wright is an American jazz and gospel singer known for an illustrious 20-year career as one of the great modern American singers. With her soothing alto voice, she moves effortlessly through jazz, gospel, folk, blues, and soul. Her debut album Salt was released in 2003 and reached number 2 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Chart in 2004.
Wright was born in the small town of Hahira, Georgia, as the daughter of a pastor, and began singing gospel music and playing piano as a child before becoming interested in jazz and blues. In 2002, she signed a record deal with Verve Records. Her album Dreaming Wide Awake was released in 2005 and was number 1 on the Top Contemporary Jazz Chart in 2005 and 2006. She later founded her own label Blues & Greens Records and released her first live recording Holding Space in 2022, followed by Shadow (2024).
The New York Times describes her voice as "a smooth, dark alto with qualities one might associate with aged bourbon or butter-soft leather." She has collaborated with many different jazz and folk artists, including Joe Sample, Danilo Perez, Gregory Porter, and David Sanborn. Wright is also a trained chef and has operated Carver 47 Food & Wellness Market on the South Side of Chicago since 2020, where she incorporates her Southern heritage from Georgia and 20 years of touring in Europe into the nourishing menu.
