A jam session is a relatively informal musical event in which musicians play improvised solos and variations over standards. "Jamming" means improvising music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are an integral part of jazz. The format developed in the 1920s, when Black and white musicians sought opportunities to share their music despite the political climate of the time.
