JLR3: Jan Lukas Roßmüller Trio | Release Concert
Communication and sensitivity as an artistic response to the present – on his new trio album, pianist Jan Lukas Roßmüller creates a sonic structure with bassist Florian Herzog and drummer Jakob Görris that communicates through many small channels, exchanges ideas, and develops them further. Continuous motivic development in composition and improvisation form the common thread. Emerging from Roßmüller's pieces, multifaceted worlds arise between fragile expansiveness and explosive rhythmic density – the trio maintains a balance between abstract impressiveness and melodic accessibility.
The three musicians come from Cologne's young, forward-looking jazz and improvisation scene and move confidently in experimental sound language as well as in lyrical, chamber music-like textures. This creates music that is both delicate and powerful. Roßmüller's first piano trio Erdung was described as "grounded in the tradition of the format and infused with abstraction" (Jan Kobrzinowski, Jazzthetik). JLR3 also unites jazz improvisation with modern European musical tradition and draws from rhythmic stylistic diversity ranging from modernly interpreted swing to complex, layered beats.
Jan Lukas Roßmüller is a pianist and composer from Cologne. With the electronic duo Book of Ra he creates "digital funk parks" (WDR). His compositions were recently heard in the trio Erdung. With the band RGR he plays freely improvised music with "new coordinates for the ancient theme of beauty" (Wolf Kampmann, Jazzthetik). The debut album Octopetala was released in March 2024 on Boomslang Records and was nominated in 2025 in the Newcomer of the Year category for the German Jazz Prize. Roßmüller was a resident fellow at the Elbehaus of the Alfred-Töpfer-Stiftung in Hamburg and is Composer in Residence in 2025 with the Swiss label UNIT Records.
