Spannung und Entspannung, Akkord und Cluster, Puls und Beat, Bonus und Malus: Es sind oftmals Kontraste und Gegensätze, aus denen ein Kunstwerk seine Spannung zieht, und sich echte Schönheit einem erst dann zeigt, wenn diese durch einen Makel gekennzeichnet ist. Der Kölner Bassist und Bandleader Florian Herzog setzt in seiner Improvisationsmusik auch auf das Prinzip des Gegensätzlichen, ohne sich indes davon vereinnahmen zu lassen.
Von ähnlicher Bedeutung sind ihm nämlich auch musikimmanente Parameter wie Rhythmik und Dynamik, Harmonik und Melodik, wie er sie zusammen mit Sebastian Gille, Chaerin Im, Leif Berge zu entfalten versteht. Dadurch kommen Eigenschaften zum Tragen, die garantieren, dass der aktuelle Jazz noch an Spannung gewinnt und zudem energetisch aufgeladen wird, wenn Antizipation und Interaktion im Flow der vier Musiker:innen der freien Improvisation Struktur und Form geben.

Tension and release, chord and cluster, pulse and beat, bonus and malus: it is often contrast and opposition from which a work of art draws its tension, and true beauty only reveals itself once marked by a flaw. Cologne-based bassist and bandleader Florian Herzog also builds on the principle of contrast in his improvised music, without letting it take him over entirely. Just as important to him are music-immanent parameters such as rhythm and dynamics, harmony and melody, which he explores together with Sebastian Gille (saxophone), Chaerin Im (piano, synthesizer), Leif Berger (drums) and himself on double bass. The result is a quality that guarantees contemporary jazz gains even more tension and becomes energetically charged, as anticipation and interaction within the flow of the four musicians give structure and form to free improvisation.
