Michel Schroeder Ensemble 2026
Michel Schroeder (* 1995) is a German jazz musician (trumpet, arrangement, composition) and big band leader. Schroeder, who grew up in Lübeck and graduated from Johanneum zu Lübeck with his Abitur, learned trumpet following the example of his father, through whom he was also introduced to jazz at an early age. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and founded his Large Ensemble there in 2018 for his bachelor's degree, an orchestra that resembles a big band with eight brass players and a rhythm section, but can also realize the sound possibilities of the dance orchestra format through the addition of four string players and a harp. He subsequently completed his master's degree in jazz composition at Hamburg until 2021 under Wolf Kerschek. Since 2018, Schroeder has also been employed at HfMT Hamburg, where he directs the SchuMu Bigband and teaches theory & arrangement courses.
Schroeder founded his own quintet in 2018, and in 2019 he also founded the "Michel Schroeder Ensemble," a crossover ensemble consisting of brass players, string players, harp, and rhythm section. The ensemble of string players, brass players, harp, and a four-piece rhythm section brings together musicians from the most diverse stylistic backgrounds. Shifting between romantic melodies, wild grooves, or traditional swing – here you can expect sounds that sometimes recall the Pat Metheny Group, sometimes the Gil Evans Orchestra. With this ensemble, he produced his debut album "BUNT" in 2020, released on LAIKA Records. He is a recipient of the Skoda Jazz Award (2014), the Lübeck Jazz Prize (2018), the Katowice Composers Award (2019), and the Jazz Promotion Prize of the Kulturforum SH (2021).
