ALMOST SOLD OUT! Billy Cobham Quintet
May 07, 09:00 PM - 11:00 PM Uhr
Horace Silver, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, George Benson, Larry Coryell… One only needs to look at who wanted to work with the young Billy Cobham (who performed publicly for the first time at age eight) in the early days of the late 60s and early 70s to get an idea of this drummer's talent and technique. He became a legend as one of the fathers of fusion and jazz-rock – yes, he also participated – or rather: drummed – on "Bitches Brew." Since his first solo album Spectrum (1973) at the latest, he was considered a trailblazer and established his own style between jazz, rock, and funk, with which he made waves worldwide. By the way, "Also sprach Zarathrustra" from the same year, which he turned into a worldwide hit with Deodato and Stanley Clarke, also dates from that time. Genre boundaries never interested Billy Cobham throughout his life; he played with Jan Hammer, Grateful Dead, or Peter Gabriel just as much as with the Brecker Brothers or John Scofield. Later, he repeatedly collaborated with young musicians and continues to do so for workshops and musical gatherings to this day, working in April with the Youth Jazz Orchestra NRW in Gronau. He played for film and television productions, engaged in social projects – and continues to tour regularly with his bands today. Currently that's the seven-piece project "Time Machine" or the Billy Cobham Quintet, which is alternatively drawn from it, with which he also performs at the club – in his luggage, by the way, the brand new (January 2026) album "Times of my Life." With this high-caliber band, the drummer, composer, and bandleader who has lived in Switzerland for many years brings his pieces up to date and shows that his music has lost none of its fascination to this day. At 81 years old, Billy Cobham still radiates creativity; his concerts are legendary. And his quintet is something special: British keyboardist Gary Husband recently played with Bill Evans in 2024 at our club; he accompanied the careers of Barbara Thompson, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Level 42, and Jack Bruce, among others. Italian jazz guitarist Rocco Zifarelli accompanied Ennio Morricone for more than 20 years and played with Stefano Di Battista, Danny Gottlieb, Hadrien Feraud, Dario Deidda, the "Mahavishnu Project," Defunkt, and the great Quincy Jones, among others. Saxophonist Björn Arkö is highly regarded especially in Scandinavia and Japan. His reference list includes recordings and tours with Dirty Loops, Ulf Wakenius, Seiko Matsuda, EXILE Atsushi, Kiyokiba Shunsuke, Greg Leisz, Per Lindvall, Tim Miller, and Joel Lyssarides. Victor Cisternas, finally, is a professor of bass at the university in Santiago de Chile; he has accompanied Billy Cobham and Tamara y Judith Mateo for many years. An absolute highlight at our club, a week before Billy's 82nd birthday! Lineup: Billy Cobham, drums Gary Husband, keyboards Rocco Zifarelli, guitar Bjorn Arko, saxophone Victor Cisternas, bass Students (up to 27 years) $10.00 Members $29.00 Buy tickets
