Victoria Tolstoy & Jacob Karlzon
When two musical companions release an album titled Who We Are after nearly three decades of collaboration, it is more than a name – it is a statement. Singer Viktoria Tolstoy and pianist and keyboardist Jacob Karlzon present with this album a kind of musical self-portrait: the sum of shared experiences, mutual trust, and an artistic language that can only emerge when two people vibrate on the same frequency over the years.
Their shared journey began in the mid-1990s during a UK tour by Tolstoy. Since then, they have repeatedly performed together and recorded several albums, including A Moment of Now (2013), their first acclaimed duo recording. Through their close, decades-long collaboration, both have reached a point where they no longer need to reinvent their story – they just need to tell it. Karlzon describes the relationship this way: "Between Viktoria and me there is no separation between soloist and accompanist, we are simply two kindred spirits on equal footing." This close communication is the foundation of the album – a precise answer to the title: Who We Are is a state, an understanding, a musical we.
