The James Carter Organ Trio: A Tribute to 100 Years of John Coltrane
The organ trio was the backbone of jazz for decades, a popular vehicle for blues, funk, and swing. For star saxophonist James Carter, one of jazz's most sophisticated improvisers, the organ trio means home. His virtuosic playing takes the combo to the highest sonic spheres. With the smooth and powerful keyboard playing of Detroit's rising B3 star Gerard Gibbs and the driving drumming of Alex White, the intergenerational James Carter Organ Trio now celebrates its seventeenth year. On this evening, the three musicians dedicate their program to saxophonist John Coltrane, born 100 years ago.
